Stoke City Football Club (also known as Stoke City F.C., Stoke FC, The Potters or simply Stoke) is a professional English football club. Stoke City FC was founded in 1863 by pupils of Charterhouse School under the name "Stoke Ramblers". Stoke City FC considered to be the second-oldest English football league club. The club's home matches are held at the Britannia Stadium since 1997. Prior to 1997, the club held its home matches at the Victoria Ground.

Stoke City FC was among the 12 founding members of The Football League in 1888. 84 years later, Stoke City FC won its first significant trophy in the 1972 League Cup Final. Because of financial troubles in 1976 Stoke City had to sell 3 of the club's key players; without these key players the team performance became much worst and relegation was soon to come. Through the 1980's and the 1990's, Stoke City FC had little success and many managerial changes.

It was Gudjon Thordarson, who helped Stoke City win the Auto Windscreens Trophy and earn promotion to the First Division in the 2001/02 season. In the last day of the 2007/08 season, Stoke City FC won its promotion to the Premier League for the 2008/09 season.

Stoke City achieved the 11th place of the league table and secured its place in the Premier League for the next 2009/10 season. During the summer of 2009, Stoke City FC signed several Premier League players to build their squad.
