Newcastle United (also known as Newcastle United Football Club, Newcastle United FC, The Magpies or The Toon) is a professional English football club based in Newcastle and plays in the top division of English football; the Premier League. Newcastle United holds its home matches at the St. James' Park stadium; the third largest club stadium in England, capable of hosting more than 52,000 spectators. Newcastle united was founded in 1892 from the merging of two local clubs named Newcastle West End and Newcastle East End which had financial problems.

In 1968, Newcastle United qualified for Europe for the first time and one year later won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup on to a successful period throughout the 1970's. In the early 1980s, Newcastle United had dramatically slipped down to the Second Divison. After several managerial changes, Newcastle United began climbing up under Arthur Cox's management and reached the First Division until the next relegation in 1989.

While Newcastle United struggled at the bottom of the Second Division to avoid relegation to the Third Division, Kevin Keegan returned as the new manager and managed to stabilize the team safe from relegation. In the following season, Newcastle United had great performance and gained promotion to the Premier League.

Newcastle United continued to succeed in the Premier league and finished the 1993/94 season in the 3rd place. In the 1994/95, after selling one of the key players to Man Utd, Newcastle finished at the 6th place. In the 2001/02 season, the team achieved qualification for the Champions League after finishing in fourth place.

In the 2003/04 season, Newcastle United was eliminated in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League and ended up in the UEFA Cup of that season which it didn't win. Newcastle kept changing its managers while trying to improve the team's performance in the following years but with very little success. It was only in the 2009/10 season when Newcastle surprisingly reached the top of the championship table and even managed to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League for the following 2010/11 season._©23/02/2012PremierLeague-Tickets.com
